Job Overview

Hands-on engineering leadership role for a growing South African fleet-management software company. Reporting to the CEO, lead a small development team, remain hands-on with the codebase, and set technical direction as the business grows. Lead and develop the engineering team (initially two to three developers), setting standards, removing blockers, and maintaining delivery momentum. Translate business priorities from Account Managers into a clear product roadmap and delivered software. Remain hands-on reviewing code, pairing on complex problems, and contributing directly when needed. Own architecture and infrastructure decisions on system design, platform direction, scalability, and delivery. Champion AI tools (such as Claude) across engineering and the wider business where they add measurable value.

Required Qualifications

Based in South Africa and available for South African business hours. Approximately 5–8 years software development experience including leading or mentoring developers. Strong software architecture fundamentals with a track record of building reliable, scalable systems. Comfortable as both technical leader and individual contributor in a lean agile team. Modern engineering practices including version control, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD. Confident day-to-day user of AI development tools. Startup or early-stage experience advantageous. Ownership mindset and motivation to build products in an early-stage environment.
