Job Overview

Boardroom Appointments is seeking a Group SHEQ Manager in Johannesburg to lead Safety, Health, Environment and Quality systems across a group’s open-cast mining operations. You will set group-wide SHEQ strategy, hold ISO 45001/14001/9001 certifications, and advise executives on risk, compliance, and operational performance.

The remit spans legal register maintenance, standardised risk processes, multi-site audits, incident investigation, training systems, SHEQ budgeting, and leadership of SHEQ teams—plus stakeholder engagement with regulators, suppliers, and industry bodies.

Requires 10+ years’ mining SHEQ experience with at least 5 years in senior SHEQ leadership, COMSOC 1 & 2, and ISO Lead Auditor credentials.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement group-wide SHEQ strategy aligned to business objectives

• Lead Company SHEQ function and teams across all operational sites

• Establish and maintain ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 systems and certifications

• Maintain SHEQ legal register; identify and reduce material compliance risks

• Roll out standardised risk management; review risk assessments and mitigations

• Manage internal/external SHEQ audits; consolidate group performance reporting and KPIs

• Lead incident/non-conformance investigations and track corrective actions to closure

• Design SHEQ training needs analyses, inductions, and awareness programmes

• Prepare and manage the SHEQ budget; drive cost control and resource allocation

• Advise executive leadership; engage regulators, suppliers, and mining stakeholders

• Manage, mentor, and performance-manage the SHEQ team

Required Qualifications

• Grade 12 / Senior Certificate; Bachelor’s in Safety Management, Environmental Science or related (Honours preferred)

• COMSOC 1 and 2; ISO 45001, 14001 and 9001 Lead Auditor

• Valid Code EB driver’s licence

• 10+ years’ SHEQ experience in mining; minimum 5 years senior SHEQ leadership

• Multi-site SHEQ leadership and group-wide strategy/systems experience

• Strong SHEQ legislation, compliance, risk, audit, and incident RCA experience

• Experience managing SHEQ teams, budgets, and projects in mining
